Taste of Weaving (TW) - Loraine Stillman


A hands-on exposure to basic weaving on a tabletop loom provided by the Art League. Learn about yarn sizes, ends per inch and picks per inch. Create a sampler of basic patterns: plain weave, basket weave, twills, and some lace techniques.

Beginning Knitting - Loraine Stillman


Knitting is very much in vogue right now. Come learn the basics in three sessions. Week 1: Learn the continental way to caste on, how to read yarn labels, needle sizes, and patterns. Also learn basic stitch. Week 2: Learn how to purl and do garter stitch. Week 3: Learn how to do ribs, basket weaves, and seed stitch.

 

Materials: You will need size 8 short knitting needles—bamboo preferred. Also a ball of worsted weight yarn.

Young Artist Studio (Ages 3-6) (YA) – Lezlie Lenz & Carole Perlman

Young Artist's Studio for budding artists age 3 - 6 years in conjunction with the Lake Forest Community Drop in Center. Lezlie and Carole will pick up or drop off your artist at the Drop in Center. They will spend time with drawing, a story and working on a project to take home. Both teachers have early childhood teaching experience and a passion for the arts and literacy.

Children will have fun learning, with an emphasis on drawing and painting techniques, using observation and imagination. Creative thinking and a little art history will tie into drawings and a variety of projects every week.

Pastel Painting (PP) – Ben Jurecivius

Experience for yourself why pastels are one of the fastest growing media in the arts. With vibrant, rich colors that can be combined over multiple layers, pastels are a natural for those who enjoy drawing and painting. Come and join us as we explore various pastel application techniques such as wet and dry pastels, under-painting and toning, and color compliments. Over the course of this class, we will also discuss and apply the various aspects of proportion, perspective, composition, values, and color. Appropriate for beginning through advanced painters, each person is encouraged to develop proficiency within their own style and technique of painting in a positive and fun environment with lots of individual attention and instruction.

Fresh Prints: the New "open" paint (FP) - Sandra Bacon

Using the new Open acrylic (which will be supplied for you), this workshop will present various ways of printing on paper and on fabrics. Sgraffitto (like scratchboard with the feel of etching), stamping and monoprinting will be highlighted- that is, painting on a glass or wood plate and then transferring the images, for a fresh spontaneous feel. This is for a "two for one" process- an opportunity to work on both the print and develop the plate itself into a small painting. For any level of artist, this is an opportunity for both fine artists and fiber /mixed media artists alike!!!!!

Sensuous Surfaces : Acrylics from the Ground Up (SS) - Sandra Bacon

From gritty drawing grounds, to "transparent gessos" and beautiful grounds for water media, this is a class to sample acrylic grounds and gels for artists of all media. Prepared boards will be handed out, as well as a chance to develop your own surfaces. From working on paper, to canvas, to fabric, to unusual substrates ... your questions will be answered and a wide sampling of interesting products will be supplied by Golden Paints. Note: bring a couple small (8" X 10" ) canvases or canvas boards, acrylic brushes (if you have them)

FREE Winter Class Lecture with Sandra Bacon

A fun, fast paced lecture/demo on acrylic paint. This talk is filled with “need to know” information for artists of all skill levels. With the benefit of visual examples, hands-on samples of products and explanations on the science of paint, you will spend an informative, fast-paced hour and a half, being immersed in the world of creating art with acrylics.

You will learn more about:

  • Mineral and Modern Pigments –Color theory that relates to clean color mixing, glazing and creation of new colors.

  • The difference between “heavy body” and “fluid” acrylics.

  • Using innovative effects with interference and iridescent colors to expand your palette.

  • Discovering how acrylics can simulate oil, watercolor, even encaustic techniques, yet are infinitely more versatile.

You will also be introduced to “Open”-a slow drying acrylic and Digital Mixed Media to use with your ink jet printer.
All participants will receive free product samples and a literature packet.
